For instance, do you travel frequently in your RV? And do you find yourself staying at different RV parks and campgrounds as you go?

If you do, would you say that some of those parks and campgrounds could be considered a little old and dated?

Or do you camp in RV parks during high usage seasons where there’s lots of other campers around? When you’re all using the electrical grid at the same time?

What Does The Best RV Surge Protector Do Anyway?

So what do surge protectors really do? Well, they protect the appliances, electronics and wiring in your RV from harm.

From things that could cause harm from power spikes and irregularities in the electrical line leading into your RV.

Now the point of this article is to discuss two different kinds of RV surge protectors that you usually encounter.

And to help you understand the differences between them. That way you can identify the best RV surge protector for your RV.

Now I see a lot of people making mistakes and buying the wrong kind of surge protector for their rig.

So this will be very important information for you to understand to avoid making the wrong choice.

The First Kind Of Surge Protector And What It Does

OK, the first kind of surge protector we’re going to talk about today is a very basic one.

And what it does is it prevents electrical spikes from doing damage to your RV.

In other words, it watches for power surges on the electrical line that is providing power to your RV.

After all, that’s what a surge protector is supposed to do, right?

And when it detects a dangerous surge of electricity, it shuts the electrical power off to the RV.

Now essentially, this basic kind of surge protector is just a bigger version of those home surge protector strips that many people like to use.

Of course, it also may warn you of other electrical issues when you plug it in at the power pedestal.

For instance, it may tell you that there is reverse polarity at the power pole. Or maybe an open ground or open neutral situation.

But it won’t prevent you from going ahead and plugging in at the pedestal anyway.

It only really takes action on one thing. And that is a sudden surge of electricity on the power line going into your RV.

The Best RV Surge Protector And What It Does

Now the second kind of surge protector for RVs is often called an electrical management system or EMS for short.

And this kind of surge protector protects against more electrical threats than the basic one.

Also, the key point is that it takes action on the electrical dangers that it finds.

Yes, it certainly does handle surges of electricity, just like the basic kind does.

But it also monitors for low voltage on the power line just as it does for high voltage.

Electricity At RV Parks And Campgrounds Is Not Consistent

And a lot of RVers really don’t understand this concept. They think that all electricity is the same when they plug into it at the RV park power pole.

But it’s not! And that is especially true from campground to campground as you travel.

In fact, electricity can fluctuate widely at times. From 90 volts all the way up to 180 volts.

But the electrical management system (EMS) surge protectors are constantly monitoring the electrical line. And the power that’s coming into your RV.

If there is a problem, the EMS will shut off the power too. Not only if there’s a surge in electricity. But also if it drops into low voltage territory.

And that’s because either one of those extremes can do real damage to your RV. And to the electrical components using power in your RV.

So for instance, if the power drops down to say 103 volts, it cuts off the power at that point. Then if it goes above 130 volts, it’ll cut it off in that case as well.

And that way your RV and all of the things in it are always protected.

So it keeps items like air conditioners, microwaves and sensitive electronics, as well as your appliances safe.

It’s constantly protecting them from overload on the one hand, and from not enough power on the other hand.

And both of those things are very important!

Other Power Problems That The Best RV Surge Protector Prevents

Now at the same time, an EMS surge protector will be looking for those other problems we mentioned earlier too.

Like reverse polarity, open ground, open neutral, and so on.

But the difference is how it handles those issues when you plug the EMS surge protector into the power pole.

Because if it senses those issues, it will not allow you to connect to the RV. Not until those dangerous situations are fixed.

Also, let’s say you that you plug in and everything is fine at first. But at some point while you’re camping things change in that power pedestal.

Well. in that case it will shut off the power until those things are fixed. And it happens automatically and fast enough to protect your RV.

What Happens When The Surge Protector Senses Dangerous Electricity?

OK, now let’s talk about what it does once it shuts power off to protect your RV.

Does that mean that you have to go out there and keep fiddling with it to figure out when things return to normal? Not at all!

Because again, after it shuts the power off to your RV, it continues to monitor the line.

And when it senses that the power situation has stabilized, after a minute or two it will restart and reconnect to the RV.

All of this happens without your having to work with it at all.

So it really takes a lot of the work out of electrical management for you. And makes protecting your RV at all times a very simple thing.

What Brands Make The Best RV Surge Protector?

Now there’s lots of brands of surge protectors out there on the market.

And many of them may be just fine. But I’m going to suggest three brands that I have either personally used or know quite a bit about.

And these brands are- Hughes Autoformers, Progressive Industries, and Southwire.

Now let me show you some examples of basic surge protectors made by these three companies.

And you’ll note that they come in either 30 amp or 50 amp versions.

So what that means is that when you buy a surge protector you need to match it to your RV.

If you have a 30 amp service RV, you need a 30 amp RV surge protector. And if it’s 50 amp RV, you need a 50 amp protector.

How Much Do Surge Protectors Cost?

But when we look at these basic surge protectors notice that the cost is very inexpensive. Usually somewhere between $80 – $110 or so.

And that’s what you can expect to pay for a good quality basic surge protector.

But now let’s take a look at examples of 30 to 50 EMS surge protectors instead.

And all from these come from the same three well-known companies.

And when we do, notice that the price changes. It goes to somewhere between $200 – $275 dollars instead.

At least, these are the latest prices on Amazon at the point this article is being written.

And of course, you can get more expensive EMS surge protectors.

But usually when you’re paying more, it’s just for extra features. It’s not really for better actual protection itself. So what do we learn by all of this?

Well, what we learn is that an EMS surge protector is probably going to cost you 2 1/2 – 3 times what you would pay for a basic surge protector.

One that just prevents electrical spikes and doesn’t really do much else.

But in my opinion, the extra cost is well worth the added protection that they offer.

Two Different Kinds Of Surge Protectors

And there is another thing you need to know about EMS surge protectors too.

And that is that they can come in two different kinds. They come in portable versions. And they come in hardwired versions too.

Now the portable version simply means that you can take it with you wherever you go.

So you just plug it into the power pedestal when you set up at each campsite. And then you plug your RV’s power cord into it.

That makes the portable kind very easy to use. It’s just plug it in and go.

Also it can be moved to other RVs if you like. And that’s a big advantage. Because you can use it with any RV at any time.

But the disadvantage is that because it is portable, it is also easily stolen.

So it’s a good idea to have a way to secure a portable surge protector when it’s in use.

Pros And Cons Of Permanent Surge Protectors

Now the hardwired version makes plugging in at campgrounds super simple.

In fact, you don’t even have to think about it. Because it’s just part of the RV’s electrical system.

But to get that convenience, you have to install it on a permanent basis in your RV.

And you need to do it right so that you don’t do harm to your RV when you install it.

Also if you move to a different RV for some reason it can be difficult to move the surge protector as well.

Conclusion

So then, let’s ask this question. Are RV surge protectors really worth the money that you spend on them?

Well let me say this. Just one major electrical incident can cost you very dearly.

In terms of appliances, electrical wiring, your electronic gadgets and so on.

Yes, just one major incident can cost you several times the cost of an RV surge protector.

Of course, we wish that everywhere we went electricity was the same. And that it was always safe to use.

But when you’re an RVer, that is just not the way things really are.

So ultimately whether you choose to use a surge protector or not, and what kind of surge protector you choose to use, is really totally up to you.

But hopefully this article has helped you be able to make a more educated decision on the subject.

That’s because generally the more money you spend on an RV, the more you can expect to get. In better quality, better customer service and so on.

Now that’s not always the case. But it’s sort of a general rule of thumb.

That the more you invest in your RV, the more quality you’re going to find built into it.

The Best Diesel Pusher Motorhomes Are Built With Quality

And full-time RVing? Well, it just puts a lot of stress on RVs.

And on lower quality RVs it puts them under more stress than they were ever designed to be able to take.

Also, when it comes to diesel pusher motorhomes, some brands are just better than others.

So in general, you’re going to find better fit and finish. Better quality materials, better customer service, and the list just goes on and on.

So when you get all of these nice things in a class A diesel pusher RV, it’s a great thing.

And when you’re fulltime traveling in it, it just makes your experience so much better. So much more enjoyable.

So this article is going to cover some of the best diesel pusher motorhomes. The brands and models.

Ones that you can be confident to use in full-time travel and camping.

Of course, I can’t cover all of the brands and models that you should be looking at. I just don’t have the time here to be able to do that.

But I’m going to give you a few brands and some of their models for you to consider.

And that will be a great place for you to start when thinking about class A diesel pusher RVs for full-time RVing.

Now let’s start with number one on the list. And if you’ve ever followed my content for very long you’re going to know that I’m a big fan of Newmar.

Especially in this particular category of Class A diesel pushers. Yes, in my opinion, Newmar is a great RV manufacturing company.

I really like a lot of things about Newmar in general. I like the the way they go about building their products and handling their customer base too.

And Newmar makes lots of diesel pusher RVs. But they also make them in lots of price ranges as well.

In fact, their products go all the way up into the super luxurious range of the RV market.

But we’re really not going to go that high in this article though. Instead, what we’re going to do is set a cap of about $650,000 on the RVs we’ll cover.

As if that was the limit that a person would want to pay for a class A diesel pusher.

And that way we can compare the different brands and models that I’m going to cover here more fairly.

And by setting the limit at $650,000 and down, that will help more potential buyers have something that they can consider.

So starting at the top on our price list in that category would be an iconic Newmar model.

One that’s just been around for decades in the RVing community. In fact, you see them everywhere you travel. And that is the Newmar Dutch Star.

Now you’re going to see a lot of these in campgrounds. You’re even going to see a lot of older ones in campgrounds and RV parks.

So what does that say. Well, it says that Newmar builds them really well.

And if you take care of a Dutch Star, you can make it last a very long time.

Also, a Dutch Star usually comes with a lot of features. A lot of amenities, and a lot to offer for full-time RV living.

OK, next on the list is the Newmar Ventana. And if you step down just a little bit in cost from the Dutch Star, you can get a Ventana.

They are getting very popular these days. And I’m seeing more and more of them out there on the road.

Now maybe they are not quite as is luxurious as the Dutch Star. But they still have a lot to offer the fulltime RVer.

More Affordable Models From This Motorhome Brand

Alright, then stepping down a little bit further into affordable territory for many people is the Newmar Kountry Star.

Now of course, I’m a big fan of the Kountry Star. And that’s because I own one. Mine is a 2004.

So what does that tell you about the build quality? Newmar RVs are really made to last.

And we love our Kountry Star diesel pusher! It’s built so well and we’re very happy with it overall.

But there are lots of other happy satisfied owners of that Newmar model as well.

Now coming farther down on the list is the most affordable Newmar diesel pusher. And that’s the Canyon Star!

In fact, you can buy a new Canyon Star at an MSRP of around the mid $300K’s.

Which means that if you discount it from there, you probably are going to be able to buy it maybe even a little under $300K in some cases.

And for a Newmar diesel pusher motorhome, that’s really great. It’s a good way to get into the full-time Class A diesel pusher category for less.

OK, now let’s move on to our second brand that I can recommend for your consideration.

And you probably already know what that is too if you have followed my online content for very long.

In fact, I’ve often mentioned the competition that goes on between Newmar and Tiffin. Especially in the diesel pusher RV category.

So Tiffin is also a fabulous motorhome brand. And they’ve been making Class A diesel pushers for many years.

They are well known among the RVing community. And there are lots of happy Tiffin owners out there.

So if we start at the top in this under $650,000 category, we have the Tiffin Allegro Bus.

And that is a very iconic name in the Class A diesel pusher field.

I mean, you just get so much value in a Tiffin Allegro Bus. And so many owners out there are very proud of their rig for many good reasons.

OK, that’s a great place to start on the higher end. But if we move down a little bit in price we’ll find the model that you tend to see more than almost any other diesel pusher.

Of course, maybe it’s just me, but almost everywhere I go I see a Tiffin Phaeton.

I see them in almost any campground that I go into. And that’s because it has such a great reputation among the full-time RV community.

Again, you’ll find lots of features and amenities in a Phaeton. And the added bonus of being more affordable than the Allegro Bus too.

But now if you move a little farther down in price there’s the Allegro Red series.

But to me, the real value in the Tiffin lineup is in the next model for consideration.

OK, the third brand that I’m going to cover today is Entegra.

Now Entegra has not been around as long as either Newmar or Tiffin in building Class A RV diesel pushers.

But when they came into the industry they made big waves. And they have given the top two a real run for their money in this category.

As a result, I am seeing lots of Entegras out there on the road. And they are often owned by very knowledgeable owners.

Owners that been through Tiffins, and been through Newmars before they bought.

And many of these Entegra owners feel that you just get more value for your money with an Entegra.

So if you’re going to consider Entegra, take a good look at the Aspire and the Riata in their lineup.

And they would be a great choice for full-time RVing if that is what you plan to do.

And if you do, you will most likely have a very pleasant buying experience.

And you will have a motorhome that works like it should from the very first day of ownership.

One that will take you on lots of fun fulltime RVing adventures for years to come.

This article is going to be talking about RV inspection costs. And how much an RV inspector doing an RV inspection for you should cost.

Of course, RV buying reached a fever pitch during the Covid pandemic of 2020-2022. There’s no question about that.

And more RVs were sold then than almost any other time in history.

But lots of the new RVs sold during that time had serious issues and flaws in them.

In fact, I made a video just a little while back that tried to explain the factors that went into that situation. You can view that video here.

In that video, I tried to answer why all of that happened from an industry perspective.

So if you get a chance to go through it, I’m sure it would be helpful.

But here we are well after the pandemic with all those issues that have taken place in the RV industry.

And it seems that many RV buyers still don’t want to use RV inspectors.

Instead, they seem to be more than willing to take the risk of the condition of an RV fully on themselves as they go through the buying process.

Why Are There Lots Of Unhappy RV Buyers?

But then, unfortunately they often have problems with the RV they’ve bought.

And then they go online and complain loud and long about the problems they are dealing with.

Often the target of their anger in many cases is RV manufacturers. And to be sure, RV manufacturers deserve a lot of the anger and resentment that they are getting.

But here’s the truth that isn’t often part of the discussion. And that is that RV inspectors can prevent a lot of that angst you hear online.

They can save you money, frustration, and time in the buying process.

They can save anxiety that could be spent while your RV is in the shop being repaired after you buy it.

That is, instead of being with you and being used for having fun RV adventures.

But of course, if RV inspections were free, well everybody would do it, right?

What Should An RV Inspection Do For You?

So when you hire an RV inspector what you’re doing is you’re paying a trained professional to test every system in that RV.

From the top of the RV all the way to the bottom. So how much is that worth? Well, let’s talk about that.

Now these days I see that there are lots of independent RV inspectors out there.

What About RV Inspection Costs That Are Really Cheap?

Ones that only charge about $200 – $300 for their inspection. And is that a proper inspection?

Well, let’s compare RV inspectors to another group of trained professionals in the RV industry.

And that is mobile RV technicians. How much do they usually charge to come to you like an RV inspector would to diagnose and repair your problem?

Generally speaking, my experience is that they’re going to charge about $150 – $170 an hour for their labor.

And at that rate, what if an RV inspector was to charge you $300 for the entire inspection?

Well, that means they have only been able to spend about 2 hours on the entire inspection.

That is, if they’re going to try make a profit like a mobile RV repair tech does.

And that includes their travel time. It also includes getting their report together and sending it to you after the inspection.

And it includes making themselves available to help answer any questions you have about the inspection report.

How Much Time Does It Take To Inspect An RV Properly?

So here’s my experience in this matter. Even the simplest of RVs will take much longer to thoroughly inspect than just 2 hours.

In fact, lets just take a look at travel trailers. Since they probably are the simplest type of RV to actually go through and inspect.

However, even a travel trailer is going to take a good inspector 5 – 6 hours to go through and inspect from top to bottom.

But remember, that’s just one end of the spectrum. All the way at the other end you have large diesel pusher RVs.

And they have lots of big and complicated systems in them. As well as lots of amenities and luxuries that have to be tested too.

So how long do they take to inspect? In my experience, they can take 10 to 12 hours or even more to go through them thoroughly.

That is if you want to perform a quality inspection. And again, that doesn’t include travel time for the inspector back and forth.

Or research that’s done in advance of the inspection to learn more about the coach in advance.

And a lot of us RV inspectors research RVs before we actually go out and inspect them.

Then it also doesn’t count the report that you put together and check for accuracy. Because nobody wants a report with mistakes in it.

And it doesn’t count the time spent with the customer to answer all of their questions about the report either.

The Truth About Really Cheap RV Inspection Costs

So here’s my question. How can someone afford to charge $200 – $300 for a full RV inspection and make any kind of profit on it?

That is, if it’s a quality inspection and they’re doing it thoroughly?

Well the truth is this. When someone charges you that little, it often means that the inspection is very limited in its scope.

It just cannot be as thorough as the average certified NRVIA inspector would perform.

Now is that what you as an RV buyer want? Is it more important to you to pay as little as you possibly can at this critical step in the RV buying process?

How Do RV Inspections Compare To Home Inspections?

Well you know, it always surprises me that some people will buy homes for $150K – $300K or more.

And they would never even consider doing so without hiring a home inspector.

They want him to go through and make sure of the condition of the home they want to buy.

And yet, they will buy an RV for the same amount of money and not even consider hiring an RV inspector.

But here’s the truth. RVs cost too much to be able to buy them with such limited information about their true condition.

Especially since RVs are actually in many cases much more complex than just a home.

Because a home just sits in one place. And it doesn’t have multiple systems for water and power like RVs do, etc.

Also, it’s not capable of being both a home and a vehicle at the same time.

So inspecting RVs is far more complicated than inspecting the average sticks and bricks house.

What Do Certified NRVIA Inspectors Charge For An Inspection?

OK, let’s get to the big question now. The one that this article is leading to.

And that is, what does a full thorough inspection from a certified NRVIA inspector cost?

Well, the answer is that it varies greatly depending on who the inspector is.

And the reason for that is that the NRVIA trains and certifies inspectors. But they don’t employ them.

Instead, we are all self-employed business owners. And that means that we’re free to set our own inspection prices as we see fit.

So that means that you’re obviously going to find a range of prices being charged.

And it can vary considerably from one inspector to another. Depending on many factors, including what the market will bear in that particular area.

But let me give you some general guidelines to go by on RV inspection costs.

General Guidelines On RV Inspection Costs

So remember that we talked about travel trailers being the simplest RV to inspect, right?

Well, if they take about 5 – 6 hours to inspect, you can often find certified RV inspectors that will charge about $500 for that kind of RV.

But let’s go to the other end of the RV spectrum now. And I’m talking about those big diesel pushers now.

The ones with all those complicated systems. As well as lots of luxuries and amenities too.

So what can you expect to spend on that kind of inspection? Well first of all, know that they can take 10 to 12 hours or more to inspect fully.

As a result, you’re going to find certified RV inspectors that charge $1200 or more for inspecting them.

Is Hiring A Certified RV Inspector Worth It?

Now is it worth that kind of money? The answer to that question is that it’s up to you to decide.

It is worth it if you value the time, experience and training of a professional who’s doing a thorough job.

One who is going to give you a complete report that you can really use to make a good decision on whether to buy that RV or not.

In my opinion, the money that certified RV inspectors charge is actually a real bargain!

But it really is up to you to decide. However, I can say this with absolute confidence.

Remember all those folks that are complaining online over what they bought in the last 3 – 4 years or so?

Well, what if they had gotten a full and thorough RV inspection from a certified RV inspector?

In that case, their buying experience would almost certainly have been much better.

And they would not be complaining anywhere near as loudly and long on social media.

Yes, you would find much less complaints about RVs and RV manufacturers then as well.

And that’s because they would have known the true condition of the RV they were buying before they actually completed the sale.

Also, they would have been able to negotiate the RV repairs before the sale was completed.
