The Best 30 Amp RV Generators

This article is about the best 30 amp RV generators that you can buy for your RV.

Of course, if you’re always plugged into shore power at a campground, you may not even need a generator at all.

If you are always hooked up to shore power, maybe you don't need a generator
If you are always hooked up to shore power, maybe you don’t need a generator

Instead, you might just have it as a backup in case there’s a power outage.

But if you like to boondock at all in your 30 amp RV, then having a portable generator can be very handy and very much appreciated!

And this is true even if you have solar power for your RV. That’s because you can sometimes go days without the sun even appearing.

And after several cloudy days, your solar power system often just can’t keep up.

So that’s where having a generator can be very helpful to fill in the gaps in your power needs.

Why Do You Need A Generator For A 30 Amp RV?

But what does a generator do for your 30 amp RV? And for that matter, what is a 30 amp RV anyway? What does it all mean?

Well, I made a video a while back on 30 amp and 50 amp RV electrical services in RVs. And it explains the differences between them.

There’s a lot of information there that even many experienced RVers don’t really know or understand.

So it would be a good idea to watch the video to learn more about RV electrical services.

And you can click the image below or click here watch that video.

But for this article, let’s just simply say that a 30 amp RV can handle 3600 watts of simultaneous power.

That’s the most that it can handle at one time without tripping breakers and becoming unsafe.

What Takes The Most Power To Run In Your RV?

And the biggest draw in most RVs is the air conditioner. In fact, it takes a lot of power to get an air conditioner up and running initially.

In many cases it may require up to 3000 watts to just start up. But then it settles down and runs on a continuous 1,800 to 2,000 watts of power.

Now obviously, that’s a huge chunk of your 3600 total watts of available power!

And it’s also why most 30 amp RVs only have one air conditioner. Because two air conditioners would just overload the electrical system.

So many of the generators I’m going to talk about here have a 30 amp plug built right into them.

And that way you can just plug the cord from your RV right into the generator.

When you do, they can provide 80% – 90% of the power you’d get if you were hooked up to a campsite power pole.

How Much Electrical Power Do These Generators Produce?

So these generators are going to have an output somewhere between 3,000 and 3400 watts of continuous power.

And that will power most of the electrical needs you’ll have, including your air conditioner.

But here’s one of the drawbacks on these generators. They are not lightweight at all!

In fact, most of them are going to weigh around 100 lb. So you’re going to need to find a place to put the generator in your rig.

And a lot of people put it in their tow vehicle or pickup’s bed. Which works well for a lot of RVers.

But wherever you put it, it has to have good ventilation to disperse the fumes it puts off.

And most of these generators are also gasoline powered. So very often, it means you’ve got to take another power source, gasoline, along with you.

And the gasoline has to be stored safely in an appropriate container when not used.

Also, you’re going to need to refill the generator with fuel from time to time. Because its tank is going to go empty after running for a while.

The Best 30 Amp RV Generators – The Quiet Ones

Now one last point about these generators I am going to recommend in this article. And that is, they are what are called inverter generators.

Now what that means is that they are the quietest generators that you can buy.

And believe me, that’s going to be really important to your RVing neighbors.

In fact, I never recommend using a construction type of generator for your RV. You know, the ones that are on a frame and are very loud.

The best 30 amp RV generators are never the construction type
The best 30 amp RV generators are never the construction type

Their sound is very obnoxious, and you’re going to make enemies really fast. Especially if there’s any other RVers anywhere nearby.

So all the ones I’m going to show you here are inverter generators. And they are designed to be as quiet as possible.

OK, so let’s go over my list now for 30 amp RV generators that I can recommend for you.

And all the links to each one will be listed below so you can check them out for yourself. Just click on the images to learn more.

#1 On My List Of The Best 30 Amp RV Generators

Let’s start off with number one, that’s from Generac. It’s the IQ 3500 model.

The Generac IQ 3500 inverter generator. Click the image to view it.
The Generac IQ 3500 inverter generator. Click the image to view it.

Generac has a solid reputation among many people for great quality and great reliability.

However this particular generator is not very light to handle. It weighs in at 109 lbs, and that’s quite a bit to move around.

It puts out 3500 watts of starting power and 3,000 watts of continuous running power.

And that’s pretty useful for most RVers with a 30 amp RV. And another good thing is its noise level which many reviewers say is very low.

It also offers an electric start, so it’s pretty easy to operate for almost anyone.

And the price on this inverter generator is very affordable at just over $1,000. But it’s also the most expensive one on my list here.

My #2 Choice For An Inverter Generator For Your RV

Next up on my list is the Champion 4500 watt generator. And yes, it’s 4500 watts of peak power, but it runs continuously at only 3150 watts.

The dual fuel Champion 4500 deserves to be on any list of the best 30 amp RV generators
The dual fuel Champion 4500 deserves to be on any list of the best 30 amp RV generators

The noise level is said by Champion to be at about 61 decibels of sound.

And to understand that, just know that normal conversations are usually held around 57 decibels.

Now it’s also the lightest generator in the bunch here, at 99 lbs. of weight.

But its claim to fame is that it’s a dual fuel generator. And what that means is you can run it not only on gasoline, but another fuel source as well.

In fact, you can actually run this generator very well on propane too.

So you may not even need to bring another power source with you on your RV travels.

You can just run it on the propane that’s already in your RV LP tanks. And a lot of people like that!

Now the cost is right around $900, and that a pretty affordable inverter generator solution.

The #3 Generator That I Can Recommend

Next up on my list is the Wen 3800 watt generator. Yes, 3800 watts of peak power, but it runs continuously at 3400 watts.

The Wen 3800 watt inverter generator

And it comes in right around 100 lb for weight. Also, it’s quiet. It’s 57 decibels in loudness, about the same as all the others in this article.

And it has an electric start feature that makes it super easy to use by almost anyone.

Plus, it’s the least expensive generator on my list here at only $850. And that’s a real deal!

Last up on my list is a generator that comes from Harbor Freight. And Harbor Freight has made generators for a few years now.

They produce the the Predator line of generators. And actually RVers of all kinds like them because there’s a lot to like, for not a lot of money.

So the Predator 3500 watt generator is 3500 watts of peak power and 3,000 watts continuous running power.

One of the best 30 amp RV generators is the Harbor Freight Predator 3500
One of the best 30 amp RV generators is the Harbor Freight Predator 3500

It comes in at 102 lb. for weight and it’s quiet at 56 decibels of sound. Plus, it’s very affordable at only $800.

OK, so there’s my list of generators that I think you should consider if you have a 30 amp RV.

And you should be able to find something that you need in there somewhere.

This Makes Using These Generators Simple And Easy

But let me mention this too. As I said before, all the best 30 amp RV generators have a built-in 30 amp RV plug.

So you can plug your electric cord from your RV direct into the generator.

Of course, some have the actual RV plug that works with your power cord. And you just plug it into the generator.

But in others, you’re going to need a small adapter that’s very cheap to make the connection.

A 30 amp adapter for your RV's power cord to plug into the generator
A 30 amp adapter for your RV’s power cord to plug into the generator

And in that case, you just put the adapter on the generator and then plug the cord directly into the adapter.

Just check the instructions for each generator to see how the RV cord attaches to it.

Either way, you can plug right into the generator though, and that makes everything super easy and simple.

Conclusion

Well, I’m very confident that with this list I’ve given you, you can find a generator that’s going to work for your 30 amp RV needs.

And hopefully, it will fit not only your needs but also your budget at the same time.

Have safe and happy RV travels!

The Best Older Class A Motorhomes Ever Made

This article is going to be about some of the best older Class A motorhomes ever made. And specifically, gas-powerered RVs.

Many people agree that Class A RVs are really great for touring the country. They are a great choice for traveling in style and comfort.

But quality new diesel pushers? Well, they’re going to start around $300,000 and go way up from there.

But even quality new gas-powered Class A motorhomes can start around $200,000 these days.

And that’s a lot of money to commit to the RV lifestyle. Especially if you’re just starting out!

So the question is, how can you lower that initial cost of buying a Class A motorhome? And still get quality when you buy?

Watch my video about the best older gas-powered Class A motorhomes

Table of Contents

Older Class A Motorhomes Can Be A Great Purchase

One way is to consider buying an older gas-powered Class A RV. And that is exactly what this article is going to be about.

I’m going to discuss gas-powered motorhomes that are at least 15 years old. So why would we go back that far?

Well that’s because many people who’ve been around in the industry for a while know something others don’t.

And that is that the years 2000 to 2007 was the “Golden Age” of Class A RVs.

There were lots of great RV companies back in those years that were building plenty of great products.

But along came 2008, and it changed everything! Because if you’ll remember, that’s when the economic downturn took place in the US.

And when it did, it took some very good RV brands down with it at the same time.

The 2008 economic downturn took out some of the best older RV brands
The 2008 economic downturn took out some of the best older RV brands

Honestly, the whole industry has never really fully recovered from that experience. And certainly not in terms of build quality.

So if your RV budget doesn’t allow for buying a new class A RV these days, then consider getting an older high quality Class A brand.

One of the better ones from those years. And I’m going to go over some of the brands that I feel you really should consider now.

But first, these are in no particular order. So keep that in mind as I cover each brand.

The First Brand You Should Consider

And first on the list is Newmar! Now if you’ve watched my YouTube channel for any length of time, you know that I’m a big fan of Newmar.

That’s because they have been a quality leader in Class A RVs for decades now.

So if you go back to the years 2000 – 2007, you’re going to find models like the Newmar Mountain Aire. Also, the Kountry Star.

And on the economy side, the Scottsdale. However, believe it or not, even some Dutch Stars were gas powered Class As back then.

These are the models you should consider for older Newmar motorhomes
These are the models you should consider for older Newmar motorhomes

And any one of these would be a very good choice for older Class A motorhomes.

So if you look on RV Trader, you’ll find that there are several of these models available across the country even now.

And the cost right now runs somewhere between $25,000 to $50,000 these days.

Older Class A Motorhomes – #2 On My list

OK, let’s go on to the second brand that I wanted to share with you in this article. And that’s Tiffin!

Once again, if you have followed my content for a while, you know that in the Class A category Tiffin is often rated right up there with Newmar.

In fact, they’ve been in a battle with Newmar for the best build quality for many decades. So Tiffin’s quality is very good.

And if we go back to 2000 – 2007, you’ll find models like the Allegro. Also, the Allegro Bay and the Allegro Open Road.

The best Tiffin older Class A motorhomes you should buy

And any of those models would be a great choice for a gas-powered Class A motorhome.

Once again, there’s several available on RV Trader these days too. And the cost is going to be similar to Newmar, right around $25,000 to $50,000.

My #3 Choice For An Older Class A RV

Now the third brand that I wanted to mention here is Holiday Rambler. And of course, you don’t hear much about them from me these days.

That’s because they were owned by Monaco back in those years. And when 2008 came around, they disappeared along with Monaco.

But the good news is that REV Group resurrected the brand and has brought it back again.

However what we’re focusing on is those years between 2000 and 2007 for now.

So look for these models – the Vacationer, and the Admiral. Either one of those would be a good choice.

Holiday Rambler RVs to consider from 2000 - 2007
Holiday Rambler RVs to consider from 2000 – 2007

And on RV Trader there’s several available across the country even now. The cost is somewhere between $20,000 – $35,000 these days.

Older Class A Motorhomes – Choice #4

OK, last on the list that I wanted to share with you today is a brand that I hardly ever mention. And that’s Georgie Boy.

Once again, Georgie Boy did not survive the downturn either. But they were bought by Forest River at one point.

However, eventually the brand just went extinct. But back in those years they made some great gas-powered Class A RVs.

So look for the Georgie Boy Pursuit, Cruise Master and the Landau. Any of those models are a great choice.

Great older Class A motorhomes from Georgie Boy

And the good news is that RV Trader has several of them available across the country now. And the cost usually runs between $20,000 – $40,000.

What’s More Important Than The Brand Name Of The RV?

Alright then, those are some of the brands that I think you really should consider if you’re willing to go back that far in the Class A RV category.

Of course, there are others that are worth considering as well. But I think these will give you a pretty good start in your search.

But now, here’s an important point to keep in mind. And that is, the brand is important to consider for sure, but something is even more important.

Especially when looking at motorhomes of that age. And that is, how well has that RV been made maintained by its owners over the years?

A Guide To Helping You Buy A Good Motorhome

This is super important when buying an older RV. So I’ve created a guidebook to help folks buy used RVs the right way.

Download my guidebook to buying used RVs and motorhomes
Download my guidebook to buying used RVs and motorhomes

And this guidebook will help you first of all find good RVs. And it will also help you find the right price for them.

But it will also show you how to pre-inspect RVs on your own and make sure that the RV you’re looking at is worthy of consideration for purchase.

So if you think the guidebook can be helpful for you, then go ahead and download it right away.

And when you do, you get my personal assistance in the buying process too.

Something You Must Do When Buying Older Class A Motorhomes

Now here’s the second point I want to make that goes right along with the guidebook.

And that is, always get any RV inspected by a certified RV inspector before buying it.

And this is doubly important with RVs that are older like those made between 2000 – 2007.

That way you can find out all the issues and problems that are there before you buy the RV. And that’s absolutely critical in the buying process!

So the use of my guidebook along with an RV inspection will help you have a good and pleasant buying experience.

Always get an older motorhomes inspected before you buy it
Always get an older motorhomes inspected before you buy it

A Word Of Advice About These Older RVs

But here’s one final thing that I want to mention. And that is, older RVs are going to tend to need more repairs and upkeep.

It’s just a fact! Because they are older, and so some of the components and items are going to be wearing out and need to be replaced.

So it’s best then if you will try to learn how to maintain and repair your RV on your own.

Because if you do, you’re going to save a ton of money over taking it to an RV repair facility. Or calling in mobile RV techs to do it for you.

So here’s a recommendation that I have to help you learn how to maintain and repair your RV.

I’m going to recommend a website called RVTechcourse.com because it allows for RV owner online training. And the training is very good!

So I highly recommend that you take the training and learn as much as you can.

That way you can be ready for whatever may come up as your RV needs to be repaired.

Conclusion

Well, buying older Class A motorhomes is definitely doable for the average buyer.

And it’s something that should be considered if budget is a priority to you as a buyer.

So if you follow the guidance that I’ve given you, it can help you save an awful lot of money.

Money that you can then use for RVing itself, and making lasting happy memories.

RV Costs For Maintaining And Repairing An RV

This article is about the RV costs associated with owning, maintaining and repairing an RV.

And of course, many people buy RVs because they’re trying to save on vacation costs. So it’s often a budget thing that gets them into RVing.

And they have a budget for pretty much everything. That is, except for maintenance and repairs of the RV they intend to buy.

Many people budget in advance for owning an RV
Many people budget in advance for owning an RV

Very often, they have figured out the monthly payments, insurance, fuel and camping costs.

But maintenance and repairs on their future RV? Well, that’s kind of nebulous and more difficult to nail down.

Watch my video on how to save on RV costs

Table of Contents

Can You Project The Costs Of Owning An RV?

But RV maintenance and repairs can be a very significant annual cost for some RVers.

And of course, I can’t give you exact figures on what it’s going to cost you personally.

Because it will depend on the quality of the RV you have. And on the number of amenities and luxuries in it.

Also, it will depend to a large degree on how you care for your RV over the years too. In fact, that’s a big one!

But there’s several other factors as well. So what we can conclude is that it’s hard to give an exact figure that fits all situations.

A Good Source For Projecting RV Costs

But Wholesale Warranties has created an infographic that can be helpful.

Because I believe that it helps folks get a feel for many of the repair costs on an RV. By showing them what those costs could be before they buy.

And why am I turning to Wholesale Warranties for this information? Well, it’s because RV repairs is what their business is really all about.

That’s because they provide service contracts for RV buyers after their factory warranty expires.

So let’s take a look at what they say about RV repair costs overall and what you could expect.

Repair And Maintenance Costs For Motorhomes

And first of all, let’s look at a graphic they made on motorhome repair costs. Just look at the image below for that information.

The projected costs for repairing parts of a motorhome
The projected costs for repairing parts of a motorhome

Now taking a look at that, let’s go up to the upper left hand side of the graphic. And we’ll cover each component by going clockwise.

So let’s start with heating first. And you can see that their projection is that expenses could be $300 to $1,500 in repairs.

Moving on to the next item, they project repair costs on slide out rooms to be $500 to $1700.

Well, honestly I feel like that could even be a little low in some cases. But next up is refrigerators at $600 to $3500 for repair costs.

Then roof AC’s are about the same amount at $600 to $3500. But then we get to the transmission in a motorhome. And that can be significant!

In fact, repairs there can run $1,900 to $12,000 depending on the kind of motorhome you have.

Then the dash air conditioning in a motorhome could be $700 to $3,800.

More RV Costs Associated With Owning A Motorhome

And now, just take a look at engine repair costs. Once again this is a biggie!

And that is especially true if it’s a big diesel engine. In fact, repairs could range from $1,400 to $30,000. That could be a huge expense for anyone!

Next up is the braking components on a motorhome. And that could be $500 to $2500 to repair.

The repairs on the fuel system can range from $600 to $3400. And the leveling system repairs can go from $500 to $2,000.

Then there’s the waste system that can cost $400 to $3,400 to repair.

And finally, what if you have an installed generator in your motorhome? Well, that could run anywhere from $400 to $4,000 for repairs.

Is This All The Possible Repairs You May Have To Make?

Now one thing I want to mention here is that this is a very good overall layout for the general components of an RV motorhome.

But keep in mind that this is not all of your possible expenses on a motorhome.

Because there could be also expenses for water leak repairs. Or for replacing your tires regularly.

Or for replacing awnings, and so on. So what we have covered are just some of the major expenses that an RV motorhome can incur.

But I do feel that the graphic provides a pretty good breakdown on the major RV components.

Also notice that there’s a wide range of costs found for each listed component.

That’s because you can’t really nail down something specific for each situation.

There is a lot of variance in repair costs depending on what went wrong.

However I do feel that this graphic is useful. Because it helps you compare repair costs from one component of the RV to another.

So it could be a good idea to use the lower figures they’re giving here as a base for RV repairs.

Or you might choose to use a mid-range of figures in this graphic instead to produce your budget.

And then spread those costs over the years you plan on owning your RV.

RV Costs Associated With Owning A Towable RV

OK, let’s move along to towable RVs like fifth wheels and travel trailers now.

And of course they do not include the engine and drivetrain that motorhomes have.

So let’s take a look at the Wholesale Warranties graphic for those kind of RVs now. Just view the image below for that information.

RV costs for repairing and maintaining a towable RV
RV costs for repairing and maintaining a towable RV

So when you look at this graphic you’re going to notice something right away.

And that is that the costs associated with the house or the RV part of the towable is very similar to the costs of the house part of a motorhome.

That’s because they are similar in makeup. However what you don’t see in this graphic is the engine and drivetrain costs.

But that doesn’t mean that they aren’t still there. And why is that?

Where Are The Engine And Drivetrain Costs With Towable RVs?

Simply because those costs are transferred to the tow vehicle for a towable RV. And that’s often a truck of some type.

Now some feel that towable RVs are less expensive to maintain and repair than motorhomes.

However, you can see that often doesn’t take into account the cost of the tow vehicle’s repairs and maintenance as well.

So you need to add the tow vehicle’s costs in along with your towable RV.

And when you do, the repair and maintenance costs are pretty similar to motorhomes.

But there are a couple of factors that impact maintenance and repair costs.

And these factors are under your control. So let’s talk about that now.

A Huge Factor In Managing RV Costs

One of them is the size of RV that you choose. Because the bigger the RV you have, generally the more expense there’s going to be to care for it.

And the more luxury items and amenities in it, the more there is to go wrong.

For instance, the more slides you have, or the bigger slides you have, the more expense to repair them.

Also, what if you have an RV that has a lot of advanced technology in it?

Well, if a lot of things are controlled digitally in your RV, you may not be able to repair it yourself.

Instead, it may cost you to have someone who’s experienced and knowledgeable to make that repair.

So let me give you a few words of wisdom to remember here about RV costs.

And that is, generally speaking, usually the simpler and the smaller the RV is, the less costs you’re going to have to repair and maintain it.

The Costs Of Owning A Large RV

Now the most expensive RVs are often Class A diesel pushers like I own.

In fact, I made a video on that subject a little while back. And I showed how that I had made a projected budget for my repair costs.

However, I found that my projected budget was seriously low. It didn’t really match the actual RV costs that I encountered.

So I feel that it would be good for you view that video and see how that turned out. And you can view it by clicking here or on the image below.

The expenses associated with repairing and maintaining my personal Class A diesel pusher
The expenses associated with repairing and maintaining my personal Class A diesel pusher

Now the least expensive RVs cost-wise are usually small travel trailers. Ones with just the camping basics built into them.

Smaller travel trailers are usually the least expensive RV to own
Smaller travel trailers are usually the least expensive RV to own

So if RV costs could be a problem for your budget, decide what size RV will fit your budget. And maybe a smaller one will be best for you.

OK, now let’s talk a little bit about how to keep RV repair and maintenance costs down as much as possible.

The Best Way To Keep RV Repair Costs Low

And the number one thing you can do here is to learn how to repair most things on an RV yourself.

Now here’s the good news. Roughly 80% of things that go wrong on RVs can be fixed by the average owner with a little bit of knowledge.

And that kind of RV repair knowledge can often be found on YouTube these days.

If you do that, it can save you the big expensive hourly rates for labor that an RV facility is going to charge you on those repairs.

How You Can Prevent Many Large RV Repair Bills

Next up is to do your RV maintenance tasks on schedule. Don’t let them slide, or procrastinate them!

By doing that, you will help prevent many major RV problems that could be costly.

OK, let’s move on to number three on the list of ways to keep RV costs low.

How To Manage RV Costs With A Service Contract

And that is, if you want to manage your RV repair costs, you might consider getting a service contract for your RV.

This is also what some people refer to as an extended warranty. And that will help you cover the major repair costs that could come up.

Now personally, I think this makes most sense for those who own more complex and bigger RVs.

And that’s for the simple reason that they have more things to go wrong that could be expensive to repair.

So here I am going to recommend Wholesale Warranties as a good place to start.

I recommend Wholesale Warranties for RV service contracts
I recommend Wholesale Warranties for RV service contracts

And a good reason for that is they have a great reputation among the full-time RVing community.

A Word About Saving Money At RV Repair Facilities

But I also recommend that you choose a highly rated repair facility that’s nearby.

First of all, make sure you can trust them. Then establish a relationship and try to do your business with them exclusively.

Because that way they get to know you, and you get to know them well too. So it eventually becomes a working relationship.

And over the course of time, that kind of thing can lead to their saving you money on RV repairs and maintenance.

Conclusion

Well I hope these tips that I’ve given you will be helpful in managing your RV costs.

And I hope they will help you keep your repair and maintenance costs on your RV as low as possible.
