This article is about the best 30 amp RV generators that you can buy for your RV.

Of course, if you’re always plugged into shore power at a campground, you may not even need a generator at all.

Instead, you might just have it as a backup in case there’s a power outage.

But if you like to boondock at all in your 30 amp RV, then having a portable generator can be very handy and very much appreciated!

And this is true even if you have solar power for your RV. That’s because you can sometimes go days without the sun even appearing.

And after several cloudy days, your solar power system often just can’t keep up.

So that’s where having a generator can be very helpful to fill in the gaps in your power needs.

Why Do You Need A Generator For A 30 Amp RV?

But what does a generator do for your 30 amp RV? And for that matter, what is a 30 amp RV anyway? What does it all mean?

Well, I made a video a while back on 30 amp and 50 amp RV electrical services in RVs. And it explains the differences between them.

There’s a lot of information there that even many experienced RVers don’t really know or understand.

So it would be a good idea to watch the video to learn more about RV electrical services.

But for this article, let’s just simply say that a 30 amp RV can handle 3600 watts of simultaneous power.

That’s the most that it can handle at one time without tripping breakers and becoming unsafe.

What Takes The Most Power To Run In Your RV?

And the biggest draw in most RVs is the air conditioner. In fact, it takes a lot of power to get an air conditioner up and running initially.

In many cases it may require up to 3000 watts to just start up. But then it settles down and runs on a continuous 1,800 to 2,000 watts of power.

Now obviously, that’s a huge chunk of your 3600 total watts of available power!

And it’s also why most 30 amp RVs only have one air conditioner. Because two air conditioners would just overload the electrical system.

So many of the generators I’m going to talk about here have a 30 amp plug built right into them.

And that way you can just plug the cord from your RV right into the generator.

When you do, they can provide 80% – 90% of the power you’d get if you were hooked up to a campsite power pole.

How Much Electrical Power Do These Generators Produce?

So these generators are going to have an output somewhere between 3,000 and 3400 watts of continuous power.

And that will power most of the electrical needs you’ll have, including your air conditioner.

But here’s one of the drawbacks on these generators. They are not lightweight at all!

In fact, most of them are going to weigh around 100 lb. So you’re going to need to find a place to put the generator in your rig.

And a lot of people put it in their tow vehicle or pickup’s bed. Which works well for a lot of RVers.

But wherever you put it, it has to have good ventilation to disperse the fumes it puts off.

And most of these generators are also gasoline powered. So very often, it means you’ve got to take another power source, gasoline, along with you.

And the gasoline has to be stored safely in an appropriate container when not used.

Also, you’re going to need to refill the generator with fuel from time to time. Because its tank is going to go empty after running for a while.

The Best 30 Amp RV Generators – The Quiet Ones

Now one last point about these generators I am going to recommend in this article. And that is, they are what are called inverter generators.

Now what that means is that they are the quietest generators that you can buy.

And believe me, that’s going to be really important to your RVing neighbors.

In fact, I never recommend using a construction type of generator for your RV. You know, the ones that are on a frame and are very loud.

Their sound is very obnoxious, and you’re going to make enemies really fast. Especially if there’s any other RVers anywhere nearby.

So all the ones I’m going to show you here are inverter generators. And they are designed to be as quiet as possible.

OK, so let’s go over my list now for 30 amp RV generators that I can recommend for you.

And all the links to each one will be listed below so you can check them out for yourself. Just click on the images to learn more.

#1 On My List Of The Best 30 Amp RV Generators

Let’s start off with number one, that’s from Generac. It’s the IQ 3500 model.

Generac has a solid reputation among many people for great quality and great reliability.

However this particular generator is not very light to handle. It weighs in at 109 lbs, and that’s quite a bit to move around.

It puts out 3500 watts of starting power and 3,000 watts of continuous running power.

And that’s pretty useful for most RVers with a 30 amp RV. And another good thing is its noise level which many reviewers say is very low.

It also offers an electric start, so it’s pretty easy to operate for almost anyone.

And the price on this inverter generator is very affordable at just over $1,000. But it’s also the most expensive one on my list here.

My #2 Choice For An Inverter Generator For Your RV

Next up on my list is the Champion 4500 watt generator. And yes, it’s 4500 watts of peak power, but it runs continuously at only 3150 watts.

The noise level is said by Champion to be at about 61 decibels of sound.

And to understand that, just know that normal conversations are usually held around 57 decibels.

Now it’s also the lightest generator in the bunch here, at 99 lbs. of weight.

But its claim to fame is that it’s a dual fuel generator. And what that means is you can run it not only on gasoline, but another fuel source as well.

In fact, you can actually run this generator very well on propane too.

So you may not even need to bring another power source with you on your RV travels.

You can just run it on the propane that’s already in your RV LP tanks. And a lot of people like that!

Now the cost is right around $900, and that a pretty affordable inverter generator solution.

The #3 Generator That I Can Recommend

Next up on my list is the Wen 3800 watt generator. Yes, 3800 watts of peak power, but it runs continuously at 3400 watts.

And it comes in right around 100 lb for weight. Also, it’s quiet. It’s 57 decibels in loudness, about the same as all the others in this article.

And it has an electric start feature that makes it super easy to use by almost anyone.

Plus, it’s the least expensive generator on my list here at only $850. And that’s a real deal!

Last up on my list is a generator that comes from Harbor Freight. And Harbor Freight has made generators for a few years now.

They produce the the Predator line of generators. And actually RVers of all kinds like them because there’s a lot to like, for not a lot of money.

So the Predator 3500 watt generator is 3500 watts of peak power and 3,000 watts continuous running power.

It comes in at 102 lb. for weight and it’s quiet at 56 decibels of sound. Plus, it’s very affordable at only $800.

OK, so there’s my list of generators that I think you should consider if you have a 30 amp RV.

And you should be able to find something that you need in there somewhere.

This Makes Using These Generators Simple And Easy

But let me mention this too. As I said before, all the best 30 amp RV generators have a built-in 30 amp RV plug.

So you can plug your electric cord from your RV direct into the generator.

Of course, some have the actual RV plug that works with your power cord. And you just plug it into the generator.

But in others, you’re going to need a small adapter that’s very cheap to make the connection.

And in that case, you just put the adapter on the generator and then plug the cord directly into the adapter.

Just check the instructions for each generator to see how the RV cord attaches to it.

Either way, you can plug right into the generator though, and that makes everything super easy and simple.

This article is going to be about some of the best older Class A motorhomes ever made. And specifically, gas-powerered RVs.

Many people agree that Class A RVs are really great for touring the country. They are a great choice for traveling in style and comfort.

But quality new diesel pushers? Well, they’re going to start around $300,000 and go way up from there.

But even quality new gas-powered Class A motorhomes can start around $200,000 these days.

And that’s a lot of money to commit to the RV lifestyle. Especially if you’re just starting out!

So the question is, how can you lower that initial cost of buying a Class A motorhome? And still get quality when you buy?

Older Class A Motorhomes Can Be A Great Purchase

One way is to consider buying an older gas-powered Class A RV. And that is exactly what this article is going to be about.

I’m going to discuss gas-powered motorhomes that are at least 15 years old. So why would we go back that far?

Well that’s because many people who’ve been around in the industry for a while know something others don’t.

And that is that the years 2000 to 2007 was the “Golden Age” of Class A RVs.

There were lots of great RV companies back in those years that were building plenty of great products.

But along came 2008, and it changed everything! Because if you’ll remember, that’s when the economic downturn took place in the US.

And when it did, it took some very good RV brands down with it at the same time.

Honestly, the whole industry has never really fully recovered from that experience. And certainly not in terms of build quality.

So if your RV budget doesn’t allow for buying a new class A RV these days, then consider getting an older high quality Class A brand.

One of the better ones from those years. And I’m going to go over some of the brands that I feel you really should consider now.

But first, these are in no particular order. So keep that in mind as I cover each brand.

The First Brand You Should Consider

And first on the list is Newmar! Now if you’ve watched my YouTube channel for any length of time, you know that I’m a big fan of Newmar.

That’s because they have been a quality leader in Class A RVs for decades now.

So if you go back to the years 2000 – 2007, you’re going to find models like the Newmar Mountain Aire. Also, the Kountry Star.

And on the economy side, the Scottsdale. However, believe it or not, even some Dutch Stars were gas powered Class As back then.

And any one of these would be a very good choice for older Class A motorhomes.

So if you look on RV Trader, you’ll find that there are several of these models available across the country even now.

And the cost right now runs somewhere between $25,000 to $50,000 these days.

Older Class A Motorhomes – #2 On My list

OK, let’s go on to the second brand that I wanted to share with you in this article. And that’s Tiffin!

Once again, if you have followed my content for a while, you know that in the Class A category Tiffin is often rated right up there with Newmar.

In fact, they’ve been in a battle with Newmar for the best build quality for many decades. So Tiffin’s quality is very good.

And if we go back to 2000 – 2007, you’ll find models like the Allegro. Also, the Allegro Bay and the Allegro Open Road.

And any of those models would be a great choice for a gas-powered Class A motorhome.

Once again, there’s several available on RV Trader these days too. And the cost is going to be similar to Newmar, right around $25,000 to $50,000.

My #3 Choice For An Older Class A RV

Now the third brand that I wanted to mention here is Holiday Rambler. And of course, you don’t hear much about them from me these days.

That’s because they were owned by Monaco back in those years. And when 2008 came around, they disappeared along with Monaco.

But the good news is that REV Group resurrected the brand and has brought it back again.

However what we’re focusing on is those years between 2000 and 2007 for now.

So look for these models – the Vacationer, and the Admiral. Either one of those would be a good choice.

And on RV Trader there’s several available across the country even now. The cost is somewhere between $20,000 – $35,000 these days.

Older Class A Motorhomes – Choice #4

OK, last on the list that I wanted to share with you today is a brand that I hardly ever mention. And that’s Georgie Boy.

Once again, Georgie Boy did not survive the downturn either. But they were bought by Forest River at one point.

However, eventually the brand just went extinct. But back in those years they made some great gas-powered Class A RVs.

So look for the Georgie Boy Pursuit, Cruise Master and the Landau. Any of those models are a great choice.

And the good news is that RV Trader has several of them available across the country now. And the cost usually runs between $20,000 – $40,000.

What’s More Important Than The Brand Name Of The RV?

Alright then, those are some of the brands that I think you really should consider if you’re willing to go back that far in the Class A RV category.

Of course, there are others that are worth considering as well. But I think these will give you a pretty good start in your search.

But now, here’s an important point to keep in mind. And that is, the brand is important to consider for sure, but something is even more important.

Especially when looking at motorhomes of that age. And that is, how well has that RV been made maintained by its owners over the years?

Now here’s the second point I want to make that goes right along with the guidebook.

And that is, always get any RV inspected by a certified RV inspector before buying it.

And this is doubly important with RVs that are older like those made between 2000 – 2007.

That way you can find out all the issues and problems that are there before you buy the RV. And that’s absolutely critical in the buying process!

A Word Of Advice About These Older RVs

But here’s one final thing that I want to mention. And that is, older RVs are going to tend to need more repairs and upkeep.

It’s just a fact! Because they are older, and so some of the components and items are going to be wearing out and need to be replaced.

So it’s best then if you will try to learn how to maintain and repair your RV on your own.

Because if you do, you’re going to save a ton of money over taking it to an RV repair facility. Or calling in mobile RV techs to do it for you.

So here’s a recommendation that I have to help you learn how to maintain and repair your RV.

I’m going to recommend a website called RVTechcourse.com because it allows for RV owner online training. And the training is very good!

So I highly recommend that you take the training and learn as much as you can.

That way you can be ready for whatever may come up as your RV needs to be repaired.

Conclusion

Well, buying older Class A motorhomes is definitely doable for the average buyer.

And it’s something that should be considered if budget is a priority to you as a buyer.

So if you follow the guidance that I’ve given you, it can help you save an awful lot of money.

Money that you can then use for RVing itself, and making lasting happy memories.

Of course, some people call Class B RVs “camper vans”. And if that’s how you refer to them, that’s just fine.

But in this article I’ll be calling them by their category name. And that is a the Class B RV.

What Is A Class B RV?

So what are Class B RVs, or camper vans anyway? They are an RV that’s built on a passenger van shell and chassis.

So the RV builder buys the shell and chassis from the manufacturer first. And then they make an RV out of it.

I can also say that they’re very popular these days, and they’re growing in popularity all the time.

And Class B RVs tend to be a very good fit for single RVers and for couples as well.

So first of all, let’s talk a little bit about the pros and the cons of Class B RVs. To help you decide if it will work for you or not.

And then we will go ahead and get into the brands in that RV category that I can recommend.

Pro #1 For The Best Class B Motorhomes

So the number one pro for Class B RVs is that they’re very easy to drive.

In fact, if you can drive a passenger car, then most likely you can drive a Class B RV. It’s really just that simple!

And that can’t really be said of many larger RVs in other RV categories.

Also, they’re very nimble in traffic and on the highway. So a lot of people love that because it makes for a very pleasant driving experience.

Pro #2 Is A Big One!

OK, next up is that they offer generally better fuel mileage than most other RV types too.

And this is because of their size being much smaller than most other RV types. Who doesn’t like that?

In fact, when we are talking about the larger motorhomes fuel mileage can be very low.

Class C RVs often average only 10 – 12 MPG on the highway. And Class A RVs may only get around 7 – 8 MPG instead.

So having a small and fuel efficient RV is a big plus for many RV buyers.

Pro #3 – What About Towing Another Vehicle?

Now the next pro on this list is that there’s no need for a second vehicle for around town driving.

At least, not unless you just want to bring one along with you for some reason.

Now when you have a Class C or a Class A motorhome, that’s not the case.

Because in that case, you probably need to bring another vehicle for around town driving.

Simply because they’re not easy to drive around town and fit in a lot of places. Like parking spaces wherever you may go.

But with a Class B RV, it can become your RV and your around town vehicle at the same time. And that’s a huge benefit for many RVers!

Pro #4 For The Best Class B Motorhomes

OK, next up on the pro list is the fact that the chassis and RV shell are generally easier to maintain and to repair than other motorhomes.

Once again, the chassis and shell comes from a passenger vehicle manufacturer. Usually either Mercedes, Ford or RAM.

So you can often use their service facilities to maintain and repair these RVs as needed.

Also, the shell is more of a one-piece unit than other motorhomes like Class C and Class A RVs.

Those RVs have laminated walls on each side of the RV. Then the builder puts the front cap and the rear end cap up, attaching them to the walls.

And then all of the walls and the end caps are attached to the roof of the RV.

That building process means that you have big joints or seams wherever these wall connections are made.

But that seam is not there in a class B RV. It’s more like a car in that respect because there are no seams that must be maintained.

And a lot of RVers like the fact that there is less outside maintenance that has to be done on Class B RVs!

Pro #5 For Class B RVs

Next up on the pro list is that the small Class B RV can fit in almost any campsite.

So if there is a campsite out there in an RV park or in a campground, chances are that you’re going to be able to fit into it.

And that includes even the national park campsites. That’s a huge advantage for a lot of people!

But now, let’s talk about the cons of the Class B RV. And the number one con is the very tight living space inside the RV.

Yes, these RVs are small! And that means that you don’t have a lot of room to move around inside them.

Also, there’s no slide rooms in class B RVs either. And slide rooms are a way that many RV builders expand the living area.

In addition to that, headroom can be a little bit of an issue for taller RVers as well.

So before choosing a Class B RV I think it’s a good idea to try one out first. Maybe rent one for a couple of camping trips.

That will help you know whether the smaller living space will be a problem for you or not.

Con #2 For Even The Best Class B Motorhomes

OK, next up on the list of cons is there’s very little storage space in Class B RVs too.

That’s because the builder puts everything that they can into this very small space. And something has to be sacrificed when they do that.

So one of those sacrifices is in the area of storage space. Now of course, there’s ways around that. But it is a challenge to consider.

Con #3 About Class B RVs

Next on the cons list is is the toilet and the shower. In fact, many people are shocked to find they are often combined together.

Once again, the RV builder is trying to get as much as they can in a relatively small space.

So they often combine the shower and toilet together. It’s what’s called a “wet bath” in the industry. And a lot of people don’t like that!

So you have to determine where you stand on that issue. Is it a deal breaker for you, or not?

Con #4 Is Important To Boondockers

Next up is that there’s also usually smaller holding tanks in Class B RVs.

Here again, it’s the space issue that makes a problem. But this time it’s not in the area of living space.

Instead, it’s in the fluid capacities for the RV’s holding tanks. It’s just not as much as you will see in larger motorhomes.

And this can be an issue especially for RV boondockers. Because it cuts down on the time they can stay out there while being off the grid.

The more tank capacity they have, the longer the time they can last without going somewhere to dump their tanks and re-supply with water.

Alright, now it’s time for the final con on my list for Class B RVs to consider in this article.

Con #5 That You Have To Consider

And that is, they’re more expensive per square foot than almost any other RV type out there.

Of course, that can be surprising when you start shopping for Class B RVs.

Because it won’t take long to find out how much they actually cost for their size.

And for many, it just doesn’t seem right that a smaller RV like that should cost so much.

But it’s mainly a result of the added cost to make everything fit in such a small space. And the added technology that is often built into these RVs.

Well, those are both the pros and the cons of Class B RVs. So what if the cons don’t bother you a whole lot?

Well then, the class B RV may be a great choice for you and your RVing needs!

A Word About The Best Class B Motorhomes

But what brands are known for making good quality class B RVs?

Brand #1 On My Best Class B Motorhomes List

So let’s start with number one on the list. And that is an iconic RV manufacturer – Airstream.

Now when I say Airstream, everybody of course thinks of their travel trailers. Because they have such an iconic look and shape.

And they’ve been building them for 85 years or so now. So the image of an Airstream travel trailer is just part of the culture at this point.

But now Airstream also builds RVs in the Class B category too. And just like their travel trailers, they are in the higher cost range of Class B RVs.

Now as far as their offerings are concerned, they have seven different models for you to choose from. So there’s a lot of variety there.

For instance, there’s models for campground camping and for off-road camping too.

Also, they give you the choice of the Mercedes Sprinter or RAM ProMaster chassis to choose from. And that’s helpful for many people.

Brand #2 That You Should Consider Too

Next up on our brand list is Winnabago. Once again, what an iconic manufacturer! In fact, they’ve been building RVs since 1966.

And even though they have built some travel trailers, they are known for making motorhome RVs.

You could say that’s where they made their bread and butter over the years.

So what about the offerings that they’re going to give you? Well once again, there’s seven different models to choose from.

And you can find Class B’s for campground camping and off-road models too. So there’s something in the lineup for most RV buyers to love.

And once again, they’re going to let you choose between the Mercedes Sprinter and the RAM ProMaster chassis too.

Brand #3 That Is The Most Affordable

Now finally, the last brand that we’re going to talk about here is the Entegra Class B.

Of course, Entegra doesn’t have quite the pedigree that Airstream and Winnebago does.

In other words, they don’t go way back in history in the RV industry. They’re a newer company owned by Jayco.

But they have a lot to offer. In fact, in my opinion, they tend to give you more bang for the buck that you spend on motorhomes.

So if you’re on a budget then Entegra could be a very good choice for you.

As far as their model lineup is concerned, they give you four models to choose from.

So their lineup is not quite as varied as the other two manufacturers on the list in this article.

But once again, they make Class B RVs that can be used for any type of camping you choose. Either for campgrounds or off-roading.

But they give you a little more choice in the chassis department though.

They offer the Mercedes Sprinter, the RAM ProMaster just like the others mentioned here.

But they also give you a choice of the Ford Transit chassis as well. And a lot of people like to have the choice between all three.

Are There Other Class B Motorhome Brands That I Can Recommend?

Well, those are the three brands that I wanted to cover here in this article.

And I feel that any of these brands would be a good place to start when you’re looking for a class B RV.
